A New Cyber Security Center
Today, I came across an article which stated that a major Corporation has just established a new Cyber Security Infrastructure. The Corporation that created this new entity is Lockheed Martin, and the Security Infrastructure is called the "Center for Cyber Security Innovations", or "CCSI" for short.
The goal of this new organization is to address Cyber and Internet Security Threats and Risks, and to provide Solutions to those specific Security Risks and Threats. For example, "By utilizing integrated cyber security technologies and a defense-in-depth approach, the [Lockheed Martin] will continue to apply real-time protection and attack management to its network and for its customers’ networks." (SOURCE: http://www.findbiometrics.com/press-release/5480).
The CCSI will also form partnerships with other Universities and Industries to come up with new and innovative Solutions to combat Security Threats and Risks.
Final Thoughts On Today’s Posting
There seems like that there is a trend now appearing upon the creation and implementation of Security Centers such as the one just described, and the one to be created by Indiana University (I wrote about this one some time ago. IU is creating a similar sort of Security Infrastructure, with heavy involvement of the various Federal Government Branches). And I think it is a very good thing that such centers are being created, in order to pool valuable resources to address Security Threats and Risks.
But, there are a couple of things that make me uncertain about all of these efforts. First, it is the larger Corporations creating such Security Entities. In all of the articles and publications I read, these Corporations state that they are creating such Security Entities in order to better serve their customers. Yes, the customer is very important, after all they do bring in the revenues. But what about the Security Needs of the rest of the public? Aren’t the rest of the public also potential customers? Why are they isolated and not able to benefit from major dollars being spent on cutting edge Security Research Centers?
Second, it seems like to me that it is the large Corporations and Universities which are taking a proactive approach in creating such Security Research Centers. But, where are the smaller Corporations in all of this? True, they could be out there giving support and ideas, but I have not heard of any so far. Granted, the smaller Corporations do not have the Capital or Manpower to create such modern Security Centers, but they can definitely step up to the plate and bring new ideas and thoughts to the table. They can for sure be a part of the overall team. I would like to see for once a smaller Security Company come out into the limelight about an effort they are or have undertaken to help address the Security Needs and Concerns of the Public, and not just about their own customers.
Finally, in my opinion, we need to get away from this mindset of "Oh we are doing this and doing that to help out the Security Needs and Concerns of our customers" and instead say "Hey, we are doing this for the Security well being of the entire public we serve". The bottom line is that all places of business and organizations, whether large or small, need to come together for the common good of addressing and providing for Security Solutions to the entire public, and not just their own customers.
